Dear Potential Home Builder,

Being a professional builder for a living is kind of like being a doctor—everyone you meet is always looking for some advice. At least that's what it felt like back in the 1980's as I established myself as a successful and respected home builder in the Kirkland,Washington area. Just like a doctor at a party might be asked for an impromptu joint pain diagnosis—I was constantly being asked for recommendations on subcontractors, suppliers, architects, and building processes. And like most doctors in that situation, I was happy enough to help out as best I could.

Then one day somebody asked me if I would help them build their own house. They wanted to act as the general contractor, but they wanted somebody who'd been around the block a few times to give them expert advice and oversight along the way. Then they did something unexpected—they offered to pay me for the help! I thought about it for a minute and realized that even with the money they would pay me, they'd still come out far ahead of the game financially by building themselves. Then when I considered how much lower their risk would be having a building expert on staff, so to speak, I realized the idea of getting paid to help them made good old fashioned sense.

So there I was in 1988 with my first clients—Mike and Lucenda, from Kirkland, Washington. They added 1,250 square feet to their home and were thrilled with the results. They told good friends and I helped them build a beautiful new 2,500 square foot, two-story home in Fall City, Washington. They told a few friends, and I got a few more customers. They told a few friends, and it just seemed to keep growing. In fact, I couldn't seem to slow it down. The number of people who dreamed of building their own home, I realized, was HUGE.

Over the next several years, I documented and perfected a system of helping people build and remodel homes... then in 1998, we started to franchise the company. Now, more than a decade later, we are the nation.s premier company in the home building and remodeling consulting business—with over 100 Franchises who have built almost TWO BILLION DOLLARS worth of projects.
